The University of Houston-Downtown’s Center for Family Strengths is hosting a six-hour workshop on Child Maltreatment Friday, Feb. 17, featuring retired police officer, motivational speaker and author Bill Davis.

The workshop cost is $75 before Feb. 13, $85 thereafter, ($30 for full-time students) and includes lunch and six continuing education unit contact hour credits. The workshop is designed for individuals working in human service agencies, schools, the juvenile justice system, domestic violence, substance abuse, faith-based organizations, civic organizations or community advocacy.

Guest speaker Davis will discuss the four types of child abuse, including wound identification, physical abuse indicators, the profiles of rapists and child molesters, applicable criminal laws and mandatory reporting laws. His presentation includes information on bullying in schools and how bullies have a direct relationship to domestic violence. He will also offer excerpts from his program for teenagers, “Sex and the Law,” which he has presented to more than 125,000 teenagers in area school districts.

Davis has developed a 62-page booklet of notes on his presentation so workshop participants can focus on the seminar rather than take notes. The booklet is included in the cost of the workshop and includes resources on child abuse and positive parenting.
